I know it's been some time since any of us has posted here. I started an endeavor to do 30 characters in 30 days that fell short after day 6 mainly because I realized it would take away too much of my time I wanted and need to dedicate towards making a better portfolio to show off this coming convention season.

By this I mean an actual physical copy of a portfolio, which needs to be revamped. My work in the past, and even now, has been quite erratic with my images looking to be done by a group of artists rather than just myself. It's been hard to stay consistent with my work and I haven't been able to sort out exactly why that is. But I recognize the problem and am working to fix it.

As for the cons, I go to Gen Con Indy every year, and have attended Origins in Ohio (my new residence, oh how I miss Chicago!). Raven Mimura told me that I needed to work on getting my work more polished, which I agree with. He has been a great person in general at cons to talk to so I suggest checking him out. Aaron Miller gave me perhaps the best bit of advice while looking though my folio last year. He mentioned that an art director wouldn't know what kind of art they would be getting, based on how varied my images were.

So I have been working to do two things:

1) To create a more consistent and polished feel to my artwork.

2) To really narrow down on my subject matter/ industry

I realize that my traditional work doesn't carry over a polished or finished look to it unless it is a 'fine art' study. I've also been struggling with adjusting watercolors over digitally without going over all my traditional work in photoshop to make it look better. This has lead me to working a lot more digitally, which isn't so bad since I do continue to paint traditionally on the side.

With Gen Con in a few months I am really cracking my own whip on getting works done for a portfolio review. Working digitally is both a strain and a relief. I was thinking to get a bout 6 solid images done but after talking to another friend, Lake Hurwitz, he convinced me to try to grind out as many quality pieces possible before the due date so that I have more of a range of images to choose from.

While I admit this is a lot of work, I know that while I was in school I often did at least 2 pieces of work every two weeks. Sometimes more. And I realize that if I was working the way I hope to some day, that a real work load would include making a lot of quality pieces, so it's not really as far fetched or high a bar as it seems. But it will be tough to stay focused and motivated.

I realize this post has grown quite long, so I will leave you with some WIP images of a piece I am working on right now.

Wish me luck on my endeavors!

Just a snip it: I've had this idea in my head for a bit now. I did the sketch/ drawing in PS, using a reference image from DA for the model. And also, since I am using pieces of the Sistine Chapel, I decided to just place the images where I wanted and 'trace' them to be safe in concerns to proportions and what not. I tried a grid first, which didn't work out.

Anyways, I am doing this all in greys and will be laying color over the piece when it's ready for it. I plan to make more images this way.
Kat G Birmelinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13681743618516397324noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5439647134106813729.post-89201039099615339222012-02-02T00:57:00.000+00:002012-02-02T00:57:26.831+00:0030 Days of Character Sketches!!!Hello boys and ghouls! I'm kicking the month off with an attempt to draw 30 characters in 30 days, an exercise I hope will motivate and inspire me to move on to some bigger better pieces. I have to admit, sometimes being an artist is a drag when you get caught up in artistic blocks and a lack of motivation.

I'm not planning on these being spectacular pieces, just pieces to keep me occupied and drawing every day this month. So wish me luck with this endeavor, or if you like, try it out for yourself and let me know how you feel! And if you want, check my blog for follow pieces through out the month!
In light of playing some SWOR and enjoying a little spiked cider, there are a couple of gallery events that have a call for art. The first is for pin-up work and while I have a piece drawn out I have yet to post it. The second is a call for pulp art, which is what I have posted below.
If I do it will be done digitally.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5439647134106813729.post-70975675167892653192011-07-05T14:11:00.006+00:002012-01-27T01:57:52.821+00:00The Frog PrinceI finished my first entry for the CGHub challenge "Fairy Tales reinvented", that quickly became an entry for the Art Order challenge as well, with Schindehette's permission.
I chose the Frog Prince tale, but I didn't really reinvent it, I just once again focused on little symbols and hidden meanings, naughty humour and such. Nothing that the tale itself doesn't already implicitly represent.
That's why I think it suits the ArtOrder challenge much more than its CGHub counterpart and I'm now drawing an Alice in Wonderland reinterpretation for that.

Anyway, here's the Frog Prince.

Original height is a little over 6000 pixels. The entire illustration was fairly straightforward and smooth except for the girl. I redrew her completely at least 3 times, due to anatomical problems and such. As usual I never start with reference. I adopt it through the process if necessary.
Since I have the "bad" habit of picking weird angles I had to use some reference for the head and shoulders, but had to make the rest up.
Hands are based on reference too (my own hands) for realism and style purposes.

Since I start moving more and more towards realism I notice my need for reference is gradually increasing, but I will never start anything with reference. Whenever I did that I noticed it killed my vision of the piece, it constrained me to what I was seeing in the reference, becoming a true obstacle.
I also don't particularly like how something entirely based on reference looks like. It feels like it's not my own work, it feels alien and depressing.
The least reference I use the best it is for me. These are personal choices and I disagree with those who promote using reference whenever we encounter a little problem.
Our memory is filled with precise images of the entire world, we just don't have access to it with great lucidity, but it's there. We can train to access it and to refresh those memories though.
First I try to figure out what I've done right. Once I know why I've failed on what looks bad I look for help (opinions, reference).
If we don't give ourselves the chance of failing through research we'll always be reference-slaves. It's good to research and experiment when doing personal work or contests with generous deadlines (most are).Aledinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09372115749601014811noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5439647134106813729.post-66573445298417224362011-06-29T17:45:00.002+00:002011-06-29T21:30:50.930+00:00Thundershock Archer WIP
So I am back from Origins Game Fair, and taking a lot of things into consideration after getting some critiques on my portfolio as it is. Along with that talking to some of my buddies and other artists, as well as reviewing a lot of the companies out there, I've come back to focus more on doing the kind of artwork I had set out to do before college and all the fluff involved had their effect on me.

Originally I wanted to work on MTG type of images, so after some thought it was recommended that in addition to creating my own art, that I ought to look at 'reinventing' concepts that already have been done. Above is a sketch on 140lb coldpress (yes, that's right...coldpress, not the type of paper I normally use) Fabriano watercolor paper. I had some other sketches I had done previously in my sketchbook that led up to the actual drawing. It's approximately 8.5x12 inches.

I've sorted out some reference materials as I got ready to finalize my idea, and am kinda sampling some of the colors to create a pallet. Right now I am using a mixture of Viridian Hue, Yellow Ochre, and Windsor Violet. I've been painting with watercolors for a little over three years now, and it's my medium of choice. Along with that it's also lead to me picking up tendencies to favoring the use of particular colors, be it for pigment, or what not. To get a grayed violet I add in a little yellow (complementary colors will do this), and for a darker near black I like to mix green into the violet. I don't often use pure black when I paint.

Right now I am taking a break, as using the cold press paper causes my paints to take a little longer to dry, and I am not a fan of using a blow dryer to speed up the process as I feel it moves my pigment around. Furthermore, I have applied salt in some areas of the painting in a controlled manner, and to use a blow dryer would push the salt around to areas I had not intended to use it.

I know some people prefer to have pristine paints in their pallet, but it's been a habit of mine to muddy up my workable pallet.

It's been nice to jump back into painting, especially as I find that I have been doing digital work more frequently. Right now my biggest challenge is how to handle representing lightning using watercolors....or rather in general. Lightning isn't something that I have painted before, so I am a little anxious as to how this will turn out.

Anyways, I've written quite a lot but figured it would be nice to feature this here...wish me luck on the lightning!

It suddenly evolved into a series of illustrations of various types of women: from femme fatales, bad girls to witches, etc. I have a few more to9 finish up but I think I am calling the series “Ladies of the Night”.

I really do enjoy black.

I think I may have a problem.

Philip Jean-Pierrehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08946810542054516873noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5439647134106813729.post-56422034261458948992011-05-15T12:07:00.008+00:002011-05-15T12:34:13.621+00:00Eowyn and the NazgulI submitted my entry for the Art Order challenge, so it's time to post it here.

It's an allegorical intepretation of the scene, focusing on symbology rather than a literal depiction of the moment.

I looked for inspiration in Renaissance painters like Caravaggio or Bernini's sculptures. I think I've been exposed to those artists more than I ever realized (growing up in Italy) and I like those poses and expressions. I tried to do something along those lines and use very strong darkness and accentuated light sources on the points of interest.

It was really challenging. I changed the Nazgul once, the mace three times and the sky at least twice through the process, not to mention how much I worked on the female figure. I had no straight reference for that, so I had to look at several things, none of which with the correct light source, so I had to make that up. A lot of trial and error.

On the other hand, the sliced volatile was fairly easy.

Final size: about 3100x3600, Photoshop.

Aledinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09372115749601014811noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5439647134106813729.post-5545332068343560112011-05-11T09:56:00.002+00:002011-05-11T09:59:01.965+00:00Eowyn and the Nazgul
Here are the pencils for my second entry into the Eowyn and Nazgul contest over at The ArtOrder blog. :)Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5439647134106813729.post-8636753803037304612011-04-19T16:55:00.004+00:002011-04-19T17:04:41.403+00:00SnatchbiscuitsI have been wanting to get theses on the bogs but work has been beating me down. Art-wise it’s a pretty exciting time for me. I am expanding now into coloring my work digitally and no it will be sometime before I post that yet. Right now I am studying values and that is a hate-bucket of moneys right there.

For the last few months it’s been all about light and shadow. I have been practicing more, going back to basics of figure drawing , not to mention trying to learn the Riley method of art. Mostly because of this godsend of a site by John Ennis called The Reilly Papers

If you get a chance go look, the education is worth it.

Now to the posting:

I love Noir and this is one of those shots that tells you why. I don't exactly remember what this was for but I believe it was a comic cover to an indie project I helped out on. The next one was practice inking pages. it is a special skill to ink panels vs. whole splash pages. The only thing about the page I like is that I finished it.

These last two pieces are RPG game art for a fantasy world.

Hope you likes see you on the flipside.Philip Jean-Pierrehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08946810542054516873noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5439647134106813729.post-20572042710014489522011-03-27T06:54:00.009+00:002011-04-04T04:52:47.563+00:00The FanaticHi everyone,

this is my first post here, so I'll briefly introduce myself. I'm an alien with italian passport, currently living and working in Hong Kong drawing stuff for kids.
After years of this I clearly became more and more mentally unstable, which led me to release my tensions through fantasy and creepy digital paintings in my spare time.
My portfolio and blog is at www.creationspot.com

This is my latest digital painting, titled "The Fanatic".

I'll show you the process, just in case you're curious.

I started with the usual round of thumbnails.
I lost the final one, because it quickly became the actual painting itself, but you can see some of the early stages of the concept.

I wanted to portray a member of some creepy sect venerating a tentacular godly being.

These are more or less the WIP stages, but the actual process has been more troublesome than what appears to be here, because I thought I had finished the painting while it was still clearly rough and undefined. That's what stress can do sometimes.
Getting feedback from people helped me as a cold shower and I realized I still had tons of work to do and I finished it.

As usual, I had no reference to start with. I tend to work without figure reference from the start and if necessary I collect it through the process if I find myself stuck.
In this case I badly needed something for the background and I couldn't find anything like that.
I found photos of cathedrals and such. They helped a bit but I still had to figure out everything by myself, perspective and angles included.

It was a pain for a while, but since I usually have trouble with architecture I guess I'm quite happy with the result and I hope I'll be more confident next time.
My focus of interest is always anatomy and figure, but it's good to practice on other things occasionally.Aledinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09372115749601014811noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5439647134106813729.post-53353291110649400462011-03-18T16:41:00.004+00:002011-03-18T16:45:41.800+00:00Hi!Hi there awesome people, i'm Daniel the swede and i'll be posting here every friday from now on, woo.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 202px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-oz3I4IQbYNo/TYOLnZPojWI/AAAAAAAAAD0/kvCZnhrUIPs/s320/img004.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5585461471777164642" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 223px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-weFCeYBaSqU/TYOLyX_S1RI/AAAAAAAAAD8/WW2yBVNRz2o/s320/img003.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5585461660418757906" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 195px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NuiWzwD-hVQ/TYOL590AlHI/AAAAAAAAAEE/TERcd3TuFGA/s320/img002.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5585461790831055986" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 194px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-T9Z0wQ__l6Q/TYOMAj_KY5I/AAAAAAAAAEM/Mh5SXYd4gsw/s320/img005.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5585461904157598610" />Daniel Möllhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10361573921471380749noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5439647134106813729.post-68942104139207302512011-03-16T10:31:00.002+00:002011-03-16T10:54:13.059+00:00As they begin to rise againSo I have been totally awed and saddened by the events in Japan and pissed by some of the fanatic rhetoric coming from some cray-cray muthasmurfers (my term for crazy) that seems to be heaped up on the people of Japan.

I was doing some brush work practice. And found myself doing some sketches inspired by the tsunami. These were done more stream of consciousness with no plan in mind but I was pleased with the result.

Of the batch I did there were the only two that made any kind of sense. I did a little clean up and included a Basho Poem in Photoshop.

As they begin to rise again
Chrysanthemums faintly smell,
After the flooding rain

Matsuo Basho

Hope you like.

Philip Jean-Pierrehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08946810542054516873noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5439647134106813729.post-59672670455658890012011-03-13T23:25:00.003+00:002011-03-13T23:33:00.509+00:00Locus Focus

You like that title? :) Just thought of it. Yes, i do entertain myself quite easily.

Locus is an online comic by Adam Black (who may or may not be reading this) and it a great read and inspiration to myself. I never really do fan art but for all the encouragement that Adam gives me by being so dedicated and just plain cool, i thought it might be nice to give him a nice piece.

I am hoping this will look awesome in the end. Still a few things to work out, in the drawing as well as the colours (which is quite obvious).

Also am i stoked about the posts we are actually making in this blog or what? :)

-PJ
Keep the child alive...

BlogUnknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5439647134106813729.post-66041651415208804792011-03-09T08:27:00.004+00:002011-03-09T08:44:19.668+00:00Getting into the game!I did a lot of work in Jan and Feb. The major difference is that I am crazy motivated due in no small part to Francis Vallejo.

I picked up the inking demo/instructional video he did through The Art Department

It was good advice, a discussion on art and using ink, the tools and what you should look for and think wile working. The best part it also teaches you to illustrate with ink, not ink someone else. I love inkers but as an illustrator this video and the approach it taught me to my work, was incredible. A lot of y resistance came from my fear of ruining a piece because of bad inking. A valid one to be sure but I was so terrified I was shooting myself in my foot.

No, he is not paying me unless you count the education.

Yeah I am overly excited and its been a long time since I could say that.

Honestly something clicked and since I looked at that video I am illustrating and with ink and using ink without fear. Its a sickness. It’s a 28-DAYS LATER style sickness. A lot of the new stuff is my inking. Is it good? I look at it and cry but I keep pushing which is what we are supposed to do. I don’t know if in my old age, knowledge is getting through but I am not afraid of inking my work. If I fuck it up AND I WILL, then crap that sucks but it doesn’t hold me back. I say screw it and move on and do better.

So this new work is me trying to get there. I still need patience and as crappy as my inks are I am seeing something what that is I don’t know, but hell like Wesley Snipes says, "Even the sun shines on a dogs ass once."

Here’s to some more sunshine.

Enjoy the art:
Philip Jean-Pierrehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08946810542054516873noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5439647134106813729.post-5402999555998189772010-08-01T17:58:00.010+00:002011-03-09T09:20:54.777+00:00The Polite Mr. TurnerThis is some movie pre-production art for an indie film coming out called you guessed it The Polite Mr. Turner. How polite is a guy with a gun, well I Imagine the rules of civil decorum probably bends to his wishes. I like this piece, I designed the title header and did the art including the inking. I am becoming more and more comfortable with inking although now I just see where i need to improve. Price of art, right.

More about me because the guys say I have to introduce myself.

I am a graphic designer and illustrator with some aspirations for doing comics but honestly I just love illustrating stories and ideas. I will be doing comic-con in New York and Baltimore Comic-con.

So enjoy! click for a full view!

Comments welcome!
Philip Jean-Pierrehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08946810542054516873noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5439647134106813729.post-5726956875292443422010-06-26T20:53:00.007+00:002011-03-09T09:28:55.515+00:00Workplace draftingThis was a piece I did for a friend when he wanted to pitch a book to a publishing company. I am partial to this one. He is still working out the story so I have time. Did I mention I really need to learn to ink.

Two year ago I was taking Eskrima Kali Arnis unfortunately the classes got suspended and I could never really go back but was so into the classes that I worked up some art based on the style. This shot feels stiff so I didn't do anything with it like add a background or some type of design element but overall I do like this shot.

This is another Kali inspired piece and tried to be more dynamic with the angle. I am not sure if I got it but I like the overall feel of this one more so than the last one.
Philip Jean-Pierrehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08946810542054516873noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5439647134106813729.post-18940794182049963342010-06-02T14:01:00.004+00:002010-06-02T14:58:59.180+00:00Ok so first up - PJ

Sweet! :) Lets get this show on the road shall we?
SO for those of you who have actually read the first post, you would have hear me ramble on. So let's see if can make this short and sweet.

The idea that we are going to be playing with is a everyone has a go each week and then we move on to the next and so on. First up a very tiny intro.

My name is PJ and i am a Sydney based illustrator and you can see some more of my work both at my blog and website.

It has taken me a long time to actually get to where i am today, which is actively following my dreams. As such i still feel every now and again that i am a bit behind the eight ball but the more i do the more that feeling dissipates, so the answer to that particular problem is pretty clear. I have been taught some basic skills in both traditional and digital art and it's my goal now to take them on to a master level, during my remaining time. :D

As to my influences i am pretty much a comics and animation nut. I love both medium for what they have to offer and what the limitations are. They both work to feed the storyteller/illustrator to push for new grounds.
For my fist piece i chose a piece that i had not gotten in time for the ArtOrder blog's latest contest, but that i thought it had a lot of potential, so i would see how far i could push it in a week.

First i started with a basic thumbnail sketch. The idea was to have her standing in front of some kind of metallic door with a weapon in hand and maybe pulling something out of her back.
So i did a quick sketch of the figure and tried to put on some clothes and costuming and maybe see what would come out of it.I wasn't really happy with it so i thought i would go back and do some more serious basic drawing with some anatomy references thrown in.
Over that i did a final sketch.
Then tracing the outline i tried for a back shot tht would be reflected on the door... and still manged to get the hand position wrong. :D
And this is where the inks are up to so far:

So let me have it. the idea is to have them done, then design the door (that i thought could be next to a window that shows us outer space) ink all of them up, lay them out in PS and then throw some colour on them. Easy huh? :D

Let's see what you guys think.

Cheers,

-PJ
Keep the child alive...Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5439647134106813729.post-42200831354163116112010-04-05T23:53:00.005+00:002010-04-06T23:59:13.875+00:00Our very first post - Mission Statement!Hi there. This is a new blog for a little group with a simple purpose: to share the work we do with other artists, get critiques and grow. Simple but powerful.

We are all artists in different fields, at different stages in our careers, with different lives, but we all want the same thing: to grow and get better and share. We were finding that spending the time trying to get noticed on forums for the purpose of getting feedback was not working out. Too much time was spent for too little return. So a more concentrated effort was necessary and this is what the blog attempts to do.

It is also an effort in building a little community for those of us involved and those of you that will come to visit us regularly. We all still frequent forums and we all have our sites and places we still like to hang out. Links will be added to all those locations.

We will also add links to places where we think that you, as an artist, will also find great resources to help you grow as well. Bear with us at the beginning as our little corner grows into itself.

As for introductions? I think i will leave that to each of our members as they make their first post.

We hope this will be the first of many of your visits.
You have our sincere thanks,Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
